Thabang Mabala is fast making a name for herself in world of foods as an upcoming new food critic. Her love of food has gone from cooking for herself and her friends, to a full-on catering business for her clients. In between working her 9-to-5, it’s incredible that this powerhouse manages to get any time to herself.

A young black woman whose experience with food and fine dining is slowly becoming a brand of its very own and placing her name at tables she has always wanted to be seated at, it won’t be too long before she’s at the head of those tables. A food critic to watch, here are Thabang’s top 10 restaurant reviews:

1. Fridays

I like that it’s black owned, has amazing food and a perfect place to relax with friends. Aesthetically pleasing with a walk-in wine cellar. I’ve never been disappointed by their food. The menu is quite vast and caters for everyone. Perfect for lunch and dinners.

2. Kream

One of my favourite fine dining restaurants. I always leave there satisfied. Beautiful interior and quite romantic. Doesn’t break the bank but it gives you the impression that it does from far. One of the best fine dining places in our country.

3. Marble

Chef’s table or nothing. Witness as they prepare and plate your food. A foodie’s dream. With a stunning view of Northcliff at night. The food is out of this world. If you’re intrigued by food preparation, this is your go-to spot.

4. Nineteen

Another hidden gem just outside Fourways. Overlooking a golf course and Mr Steyn’s castle in the heart of the Estate. They don’t take walk ins. I’ve been here twice; the food always meets my expectations. A fine dining experience you’d never forget.

5. Summerfields River Café

A breathtaking, stunning café situated by the river. Surrounded by nature and the sound of the river in the background. Reservations are important as they have slots for breakfast, lunch and supper. Situated in a hotel which offers spa treatments as well. I love everything about this place.

6. Pont de Val

A romantic restaurant by the dam (book a boat ride as well) in the midst of trees and nature. The food is amazing as the inhouse chef specially prepares it himself for every guest. Amazing wine selection and menu.

7. Ethos

I’ve only had their Tapas but I’d highly recommend. Aesthetically pleasing and a broad wine selection. They close the kitchen between 3 and 6 to prepare for dinner. I find it a bit romantic. Has a stunning view overlooking Morningside. The setup and lighting is amazing. The detailing from cutlery to glasses, spectacular!

8. Olives and Plates

Beautiful interior, amazing wine list and creativity when it comes to food presentation. I’d highly recommend as a date spot if you want to impress.

A bit intimate with a modern finish.

9. Big Mouth

Sea food, sushi and grills. They master it all. In the heart of Sandton with stunning interior décor. Big Mouth should be on everyone’s bucket list. Reservations are important as it sometimes gets quite packed. .

10. Cradle Boutique Hotel

If you’re looking to leave the city for a while but don’t want to go far, this is the perfect place. A hidden gem in the midst of nature Perfect for date nights or weeks away (It’s in a hotel). An amazing wine selection and wine cellar. I’m yet to see anything like this.
