Plot the place with Motherland Connect: Polokwane

Polokwane, formely known as Pietersburg, Polokwane – which means “Place of safety” in Northern Sotho. In the 1840’s under Andries Potgieters leadership Zoutpansbergdorpwas established 100km’s to the northwest. This town had to be abandoned as there were several clashes between the tribes. They then founded a new town in 1886, which they named Pietersburg. It is the biggest city north of Pretoria and has a population of over 500 000. During the Anglo Boer War, the British built a concentration camp to house 4 000 boer women and children. The place officially became a city in 1992 and was officially renamed Polokwane in 2005.
